My program focused around the investigation of psychosocial factors related to the achievement of safe, timely, sustained and satisfying employment outcomes following injury that is towards the more severe end of the severity spectrum. While my orientation is focused on the individual, I am also interested in how external environments impact on outcome.

My research included the following:

  • Investigations of injury rates and outcomes,
  • Studies of predictors and correlates of RTW, with an emphasis on psychosocial variables that have the potential to be amenable to intervention,
  • Efforts to understand the impact of geographical and social settings on RTW outcomes,
  • A study of barriers and facilitators of employment gains,
  • An intervention aimed at helping people who have been out of work for an extended period of time to find employment and
  • Theoretical and methodological investigations into conceptualizing and measuring RTW.
  • Studies of how to measure RTW expectations, how they are formed and how they relate to RTW outcomes.

I contributed to both of the CDR’s main research themes. That is: 1) Understanding how individual, workplace and other contextual factors affect work disability and return to work outcomes, and how this knowledge can improve outcomes, and 2) Understanding and improving the process of returning to work and staying at work, after injury or illness occurs.

As it relates to Theme 1, I conducted research into RTW expectations, contextual variation and how medical care patterns influence disability duration and return to work. And in regards to Theme 2, I did research exploring RTW processes, validating the development model of RTW, and exploring what facilitates forward movement and what hinders, compromises or stalls a worker’s progress.
